Tips for parents with petite kids: 5 great ways to help your child grow taller

This post is sponsored by NuBest. All opinions are my own.

My oldest daughter Milinda has always been petite. It didn’t really bother me because my husband and I aren’t that tall and while she wasn’t the tallest girl in her age group she was still growing well. But after her last doctor visit when we discovered she was at 7 percentile (while 5-95 is considered a norm) I started to learn more about the ways I can do as a parent to help her grow tall and healthy.

Scientists estimate that about 80 percent of an individual’s height is determined by DNA but there are some factors, like lifestyle and a healthy diet that can influence the height of children and help them reach their full height potential. Here are 5 things you can do.

Nutrition

Healthy nutrition is key to your child’s healthy development and overall well-being. To help your kid grow to his/her full potential, make sure they have a proper diet. Although an occasional pizza or chocolate won’t hurt (they are kids after all!), too much junk food and sugar are known to stunt the growth of children. There are some foods that are really great for children (and their parents, too! 🙂

Protein-rich foods like beans (also high in iron and B vitamins), quinoa (one of the few plant-based foods that are considered a complete protein and it is also an excellent source of magnesium, a necessary component of bone tissue that can increase bone mineral density), yogurt, milk, and eggs.

Healthy fats: avocado (rich in vitamin K, which is essential for bone health), salmon (contains omega-3 fatty acids are a type of heart-healthy fat that’s crucial to growth and development), almonds (also high in vitamin E and have been shown to inhibit the formation of osteoclasts, a type of cell that breaks down bone tissue).

Berries, such as blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries, are all brimming with important nutrients. They’re especially high in vitamin C, which promotes cell growth and tissue repair. Vitamin C also increases the synthesis of collagen, which is the most abundant protein in your body.

Leafy greens, such as spinach, kale, arugula, and cabbage, are also amazing when it comes to nutrition. While the exact amount of nutrients fluctuates between different types, leafy greens generally offer a concentrated amount of vitamin C, calcium, iron, magnesium, and potassium. They’re also rich in vitamin K, a nutrient that can increase bone density to support enhanced growth and help maintain your height.

Getting enough sleep

My mom used to say that I needed to go to bed early to get enough sleep because that’s when I grow.

The National Sleep Foundation states that babies, children, and teens need significantly more sleep than adults do in order to support their physical and mental growth. Recommended sleep by the NSF for babies is 14-17 hours, toddlers 11-14 hours, preschool-aged children need 10-13 hours, school-aged children 9-11 hours, and teenagers should get a recommended 8-10 hours of sleep each night.

Significant growth happens during sleep as secretions of human growth hormone peak during those hours. We as parents need to help our kids establish a healthy bedtime routine, making sure they go to bed on time (between 7 pm – 9 pm) so they can get enough sleep.

 Exercising

Yoga, volleyball, basketball, cycling, skipping or swimming – these are amazing all-body exercises where every muscle in the body works. These activities strengthen the spine and lay the groundwork for a tall, healthy body.

Hanging (also pull-ups, and spin-ups!) and stretching are also great, it helps the spine elongate and also improves the posture of your child at all times, which is an important part of becoming taller.

 Spending time outside

Getting out, getting some fresh air, going for a walk, running around, playing with friends, and riding a bike – it’s great for overall health and wellbeing. But that’s also how kids can get their Vitamin D. Vitamin D helps in muscle and bone growth which will help in increasing a child’s height. Vitamin D also helps your body absorb calcium from your diet and helps in strengthening your bones. So encourage your kids to spend some time outside every day – ideally for a couple of hours.

Supplementing

Sometimes it’s hard (or impossible) for kids to get all the nutrition their bodies need just from food, especially for picky eaters. Most parents do their best to ensure that the child is eating vegetables and protein and all the healthy stuff but kids may still be lacking some important vitamins or minerals. That’s when supplementing can help. After lots of research, I discovered NuBest and decided to try NuBest Tall Kids for Milinda. It contains Calcium, multivitamins, and multi-minerals which support healthy growth and development in kids from 2 to 9 years old. It’s chewable, tastes really good and has berry flavor. Milinda loves her vitamins and never forgets about her daily dose.
